Roland's going in at Dunwich Legacy.

The idea is to investigate as few times as possible, and discover all my clues via enemies, Working a Hunch, and Art Student. The student also gives me some sanity buffer, and by being expendable she and the Guard Dogs can cycle in and out as needed. It might be a little tight on resources but that's likely to only be relevant in the Clover Club quest.

Prepared for the Worst seems best in a Roland deck because it can help you get his epic pistol, but usually I think it's best as an Int/Str wild card. Shortcut and Dodge are vital to get around enemies, but frankly most of the deck is focused on winning skill tests, fighting, and discovering clues without investigating. For the Int checks that are required for non-clue purposes, Perception and Working a Hunch are there.

If you're wondering why the best allies aren't in this deck (Milan or L2 Beat Cop), it's because I wanted to be able to have access to the slot for Art Student, which required that I use only expendable allies (Guard Dog does a similar function). If you want to get either of those epic allies, go get a Charisma and go for it (I might get Charisma anyway if I can save any professors).

Upgrades to be determined by the events of the campaign...

Hey hey DavFlamerock, great deck - I wrote up almost exactly similar about a week ago! arkhamdb.com Same ideas behind it - Art Student, which necessitates a cheaper, disposable ally, and I opted for Preposterous Sketches and Inquiring Mind to play off leaving clues on locations. I do love Working a Hunch too though.

How have the one-of talents worked out for you? Do you find Roland has the bucks to back them up? I found playing him solo he was so cash-strapped, and dropping something on 2 resources (sketches / student) or 3 (machete / guard dog) meant that I rarely left resources around. What about you?

@zozo I really want to like Preposterous Sketches and Inquiring Mind - both are awesome, and in Roland they help reward you for those times when you get stuck wasting time on a Cover Up. But there's so many quests where locations just permanently have 0 clues on them, and that worries me (also near the end of the game after you've picked most of them up). Perhaps in higher player counts, where there's just more clues in general, they would be more effective. I'm certainly going to try Inquiring Mind in more multiplayer-focused Rex/Daisy decks.

As for the talents, they're usually the first or second things to go when upgrading, but I'm pretty aggressive with them. They're expensive, to be sure, but once they hit the table they smooth out the chaos bag SO much. I generally like to get one down early and just use the other one as fodder from my hand, but since the deck works fine if I never see them then they're only 1x copies.

For whatever reason, I rarely find myself as cash-strapped with Roland than everyone else (people keep telling me how expensive Roland's cards are). Like yeah most of the time I'm not playing the cards in my hand, but at the same time a lot of my cards are better off for tests anyway. After the second weapon, all the rest are dead, as is the second Guard Dog. I generally only spend about 12-15 resources total in this deck (not counting Talent triggers) and that's a reasonable amount to expect to see throughout a game (+ Emergency Cache).
