Let's be honest, it doesn't take much effort to break Rex Murphy, but this deck ICEBREAKS him... I'll see myself out. This build exploits Ice Pick, Scavenging, & Crafty.

I'll keep this short... You're a clue vacuum with great mobility & a little fighting power.

Core Loop - Discard Ice Pick to discover an additional clue. Use Scavenging to return Ice Pick to your hand. Use Crafty to put it back in play. Rinse repeat (once per scavenging).

Other fun tricks: Pocket Telescope + Hiking Boots = Once you discover the last clue from a connecting location via Pocket Telescope, you can move to a location connected to the connecting location (two moves away). Free & fast teleports!

Crafty + Join the Caravan = fast action to move anywhere for free (the two resources from Crafty + 3 classes from Crafty).

Strange Solution + Ice Pick = 7 & 4 damage.

In the Thick of it = 1x Ice Pick first scenario.

Your pocket telescope + hiking boots combo does not seem legit. The hiking boots only trigger when you discover the last clue at YOUR location.

This 100% works.

Pocket Telescope: Action: Investigate. Investigate a revealed connecting location as if you were there.

Hiking Boots: Reaction: After the last clue is discovered from your location, exhaust Hiking Boots: Move to a connecting location with at least 1 clue, or to a connecting unrevealed location.

You perform all 8 steps of the Investigation zkill test "As If" you were somewhere else. The skill test is still happening during step 7 when you resolve the "discover a clue" effect of its success and trigger Hiking Boots. The skill test doesn't end until step 8.

Can also work with In the Know, but that costs XP with limited secrets.

Here is the official clarification from FFG:

From ahc_faq_v17:

"(2.10) “As if…”

Some card effects allow an investigator to resolve an ability or perform an action as if a certain aspect of the game state were altered, using the text “as if…” to indicate the difference. The indicated ability or action is resolved with the altered game state in mind, but the actual game state remains unchanged.

This includes all steps of the indicated ability/action, including the paying of its costs, attacks of opportunity (where applicable), and resolving each aspect of its effect. Other card abilities or game effects do not resolve with the altered game state in mind; only the indicated ability/action.”

So I am not sure, because Telescope uses the “as if” wording.

"As If" was ammended Oct 2020. See the rules section of this site. It's clear:

"Other card abilities or game effects resolved during this duration are also resolved with the altered game state in mind."

Oh ok, I was not aware of that. Well then you make me realize how many crazy-broken combos can take advantage of that :-)

Are you sure that you can use and pick up the same ice pick in one ivestiagion action? I'm a bit concerned about the skill test timngs

Jul 11, 2022 Calprinicus · 5023

@milo17: Yes, the order of operations allows you to reclaim the same Ice Pick with scavenging.

There is this clause in step 7 of a skill test: "If there are multiple results to be applied during this step, the investigator performing the test applies those results in the order of his or her choice."

Step 7 is when both Ice Pick and Scavenging would trigger. So you can choose to discard Ice Pick first for the additional clue, then find it in my discard pile with scavenging after.

What about encounter deck protection? What if you get stucked with a Frozen in fear?

@milo17 @Calprinicus Hello. Scavenging triggers in St. 6 not Step 7. In Step 6 you determine the success/failure of the test. Scavenging is "when you successfully investigate by 2 or more". You cannot scavenging back the ice pick in the same action.

Jul 12, 2022 Calprinicus · 5023

@chirubime This is not correct.

Step 6 is only for determining success or fail and by how much. "Compare the investigator's modified skill value to the difficulty of the skill test."

Step 7 Covers ALL triggers based on step 6. "Resolve the appropriate consequences (based on the success or failure established during step ST.6) at this time." And you can choose order in which they resolve "If there are multiple results to be applied during this step, the investigator performing the test applies those results in the order of his or her choice.”

@Calprinicus It's literally in the FAQ for Scavenging.

"Success is determined in Step 6 of the Skill Test Timing, and committed cards get discarded in Step 8, so you cannot use Scavenging to get back an Item card that you've just committed to the same investigation attempt."

Jul 12, 2022 Calprinicus · 5023

@chirubime you are NOT committing ice pick, aka using the pips on the upper left.

Commiting a card is a specific action from step 2 of a skill test. "Commit cards from hand to skill test." , aka using the pips on the card that was in your hand to increase your skill value.

This is DIFFERENT than using it for its in play ability. Ice Pick can be discarded on step 7 when you decide when to resolve the discard of the "on success" ability.

This is also possible when you discard an item using Cornered or "Ashcan" Pete then using Scavenging to retrieve the just discarded item.

Recap:

  • step 6: determine success/fail & by how much.
  • step 7: All "if successful" abilities trigger, you choose the order.
  • step 8. Formal clean-up. Committed cards (used from your hand) are discarded, end "as if" game state, & return revealed chaos tokens.

I went through the FAQ to see if I missed anything, and I did:

(1.7) Skill Test Results and Advanced Timing During Step 7 of Skill Test Timing (“Apply skill test results”), all of the effects of the successful skill test are determined and resolved, one at a time. This includes the effects of the test itself (such as the clue discovered while investigating, or the damage dealt during an attack), as well as any “If this test is successful...” effects from card abilities or skill cards committed to the test.

Reaction or Forced abilities with a triggering condition dependent upon the skill test being successful or unsuccessful (such as “After you successfully investigate,” or “After you fail a skill test by 2 or more”) do not trigger at this time. These abilities are triggered during Step 6, “Determine success/failure of skill test.”

===

Scavenging

The sets the timing to resolve at step 6 (determine success/failure of the skill test). I was incorrect before in thinking it resolved in step 7 with other "if successful" abilities.

Ice Pick

"If you succeed, you may discard Ice Pick to ... discover 1 additional clue at your location." Would trigger at step 7 AFTER scavenging resolved.

===

You cannot fetch Ice Pick with Scavenging since scavenging must trigger first (step 6 vs step 7).

@Calprinicus I was not suggesting committing ice pick is the same thing as using it's effect. I'm showing you the faq for scavenging to clearly points out it's reaction happens during step 6

Jul 13, 2022 Calprinicus · 5023

@chirubime Sorry. That was unclear at the time
