DESPERATE SILAS SHOTCASTER SWINGS BETWEEN COMBAT & AGILITY

Use In the Thick of It both horror for Silas Marsh to go desperate. Low horror desperation! LET'S GO!

INVESTIGATOR CARD:
  • The novel signature and weakness was chosen because of the lesser effect the weakness has in this particular deck. The Innsmouth expansion's Siren Call is crippling since the cards give so many boosts. However that version can work if you stick to using agility and Ice Picks and Yaotl, as those boosts do not count as icons from cards committed.

MULLIGAN

PILOTING

  • Although agility should be boosted (Peter Sylvestre and Track Shoes), Hyperphysical Shotcaster lets you choose, and you have a choice between strength and agility, depending on the Desperate commits you have at hand. Sometimes you want to use Stunning Blow on the enemy.

  • Track Shoes keeps good use of the agility boost. Thanks to Hyperphysical Shotcaster being able to discover a clue from anywhere, Silas should aim to explore and reveal as many locations as he can, then investigate from the lowest shroud location to trigger Scavenging as often as possible.

  • At full build, Peter Sylvestre, Track Shoes, an ice pick, and the Hyperphysical Shotcaster lets him Resolve Manifest at 9 without any commits. The Track Shoes ability is another test to make good use of his agility.

  • Yaotl gives you the Desperate icons a second time after you use them, possibly twice if nothing goes to the discard pile and he refreshes in upkeep.

  • This deck needs awareness of the top card of the discard to get value from Yaotl. Ideally keep an agility on top of the discard. Be aware that discarding an Ice Pick for an extra clue or damage will change the top of the discard to a non-.

  • Note using Yaotl: Where skills are committed, they go into limbo and not yet onto the discard, and therefore Yaotl cannot add icons from cards committed in that test. After the test, make sure you have a good card on top of the discard.

  • Hiding Spot is also good whether played, for a commit or extra agility from Yaotl.

SANITY SURVIVAL

  • Silas has some options for sanity endurance, despite the handicapped willpower. Peter Sylvestre and Cherished Keepsake are the common ones, but use Talisman of Protection where possible as well. Discarding it cancels the damage and horror, but because it is fast, allows Silas to instantly play it without losing an action.

SCAVENGING

NOTEWORTHY ADDONS

I've decided against including Short Supply because unlike Yorick, Silas doesn't have the ability to recur Shotcaster from his discard nor Resourceful working on the shotcaster. If you do want to go this route, include Desperate Search to help trigger one hit of scavenging, and even then it's still risky.

FINAL NOTES

With these numbers, it's very possible this deck can work in Hard/Expert.

This whole decklist can also be made in Rita Young. The main difference is the slightly less value Reckless Assault would give you, and Stunning Blow if you're not testing with at all. But I like this in Silas because you can easily swing between or and still get very decent numbers with your desperate cards.

Shoutout to Val & PlayingBoardGames (link below) for the awesome collaboration video that inspired me to play with the shotcaster, although I took my own spin so that Desperate gets use of not just agility but combat as well.
