Rex Murphy - Hard Hitting News | 303 | 251 | 15 | 1.0 |

Ah, Rex Murphy, you dreadful failure of a man...
This is what I regularly think as I play Rex solo, which is what I've been doing a fair bit of, lately, using this here deck. And that's why, straight away, you'll see that I'm running Rabbit's Foot to leverage the times when failure becomes inevitable. The challenge, of course, is ensuring that the times when Rex fails aren't the crucial times... (ok, admission: usually they are. The number of times I've drawn a tentacle up again this prince is.... too too high indeed.)
The core 'engine' of this deck, if there is such a thing, is Dr. Milan Christopher, Hyperawareness and Backstab for dealing with enemies. The doctor makes investigating a doddle, and repays you for your hard work. What do you do with all that money? Dump it into hyperaware attacks, either using Rex's ok or, using Mind over Matter, getting his much more reasonable involved.
But Z, I hear you cry, there are only 2 Backstabs in the deck. How is that a plan? Well, that's where Rex's elder sign ability comes in, as well as the Laboratory Assistant. Rex hates drawing cards, because of his weakness... but he loves drawing cards because he has so many tricks in his deck that need to hit his hand. The neutral skill cards are wonderful for that, but often turns for me will be investigate-draw-draw or another similar combo. With Rabbit's Foot out, failure becomes a card draw, as does success with the elder sign. Then it's all about picking your battles....
This is a really enjoyable challenging deck. Rex's stats are so nearly in the middle that it can be quite tricky to decide what to do with him. One of the great pleasures I derive from playing this deck is working out 'what's my line here?'. Enjoy!

Feb 16, 2017I enjoyed the write up. Personally I used to include dynamite but it was too slow and it could hurt the game tempo. The Backstab looks like a decent alternative. You seem to have less investigation cards compared to other Rex decks, like Working a Hunch or Flashlight. Does this affect your overall investigation for Rex ? Also if you already played with this deck what resolutions did you get? I am having a hard time with Rex in Extracurricular Activities. |
Feb 16, 2017Hey Rex is an investigatory beast, especially with Milan out. A magnifying glass and Milan means he investigates for 6 , which is pretty darn ace. So no, I've not run into problems. I'd definitely like to run a few more games with this deck, maybe with Miskatonic Museum changes suggested above, but so far, no problems. As to the particular cards you mention, I think Working a Hunch competes for a slot with Deduction, and seeing as I wanted to run the latter, I had no space for the former - I also want to save my money for Hyperawareness and Backstab and Deduction's free! Flashlight has a similar competition with Magnifying Glass - sure, it can take shrouds down to 0, which is great, but for what Rex is trying to do, Magnifying Glass is fine. It's a recurring bonus, it's cheaper, and it takes take an action to play. Resolutions: I'll try the Dunwich scenarios next and let you know how I go. |
Feb 17, 2017I've played rex as the primary investigator in a 4 man group and must admit, his ability is comes up more often than you might think. Combined with rabit's foot as compensation when his weakness gets you (or you draw auto fail), he plays really smooth, as long as the other players take out monsters. I even removed my emergency Kukri, as there never was a monster left to kill... With so many players, locations have 4-8 clues on them. So cards like Deduction that grant a single clue are rather useless compared to assets that grant passive bonuses and make investigating easier on the long run. Sneak Attack is an interesting choidce, however i prefer Burglary, to gain ressources to fuel Hyperawareness. |
Feb 17, 2017Sry for double post, but 1 copy of Physical Training is also a nice addition to Hyperawareness, so you can boost all of his stats. |
Feb 17, 2017No need to apologise - as noted above, I've moved to a 2 x Rabbit's Foot, 2 x Burglary, 1 x Backstab with 2 x "I've got a plan!" to make up 3 damage cards. But I've been playing solo. I'm sure in multiplayer he only becomes more efficient - 2 clues for one action, especially if that's nearly a guaranteed success, becomes wonderful.

Feb 18, 2017I can't really remember, but i don't really needed it (or didn't have it, when i did). In our 4 man game, we got 3 mystics and 1 guardian, so most enemies got hit by Shrivelling, while Zoey Samaras stayed close to me. There was only one moment where it really shined, when a cultist with many doom needed to die before causing the agenda to advance. Generally it's inefficient to attack with Rex, as he only deals 1 damage, while his ability is not limited to 1/turn, so it's better to investigate instead. It's always fun to use Burglary to trigger Dr. Milan Christopher and Rex Murphy's ability to get 4 ressources and 1 clue with only 1 action. Regarding Laboratory Assistant i know that she sounds good, but you're better off taking 2 actions to draw 2 cards, instead of playing her (which costs 2 additional ressources). And once you got Dr. Milan Christopher is out, she's a pretty dead card. |
Feb 18, 2017Remember this deck is for solo, so even if you like Rex solely to investigate, there are times when he can't. I appreciate your experiences are from group play, but this is specifically a solo deck. |
Feb 19, 2017Yes, that's why i mentioned Physical Training, i see it more useful in solo, if you have the card space to include it twice. The instecticist (maybe with Burglary) should give you the ressources to pay for it. |
Aug 16, 2017I've been thinking about rebuilding a new Rex for solo - crazy to think that this deck was pre-"I've got a plan!" and Dr. William T. Maleson and so many other things. With Higher Education now such a staple card, is Hard Knocks an even stronger shout for Rex? Knocks, Burglary, something else too.... |
Ok so I made a weenie change to this, but rather than post a new list, I thought I'd write the thoughts up here.
1) Sneak Attack out, Burglary in. Sure, it's a 1 of, and solo there aren't too many locations you'll want to investigate repeatedly (Rex's reaction ability only rarely fires) but because this deck wants money, Burglary fills that role better than the sneak.
2) With the advent of the Miskatonic Museum, looking for space for a certain 3-cost event becomes more important. I'd be inclined to go to 1 x Backstab and 2 x Burglary, and then drop both Seeking Answers for the 2 new events. The alternative is keeping the backstabs in and losing the lab assistants for the event, perhaps...
