Intro

This year, I will propose a series of 5 investigator decks, released one week apart, to help people who have little time to deckbuild, or are still getting familiar with the new cards. May these serve as a base for you to build your own decks, adapt to any other campaign or group you are doing.

Disclaimer: These decks have never been run through The Drowned City Campaign since they are published before its release. They are built and tested with a 2 context.

Enjoy the reading and I hope you'll have fun with these playing The Drowned City expansion!

Main Strategy

Firearms, a lot of Firearms

A gunslinger investigator has been a community dream for a long time now, the main reason being that there are a lot of 1-handed guns in the game, but no one seemed able to pull out a deck centred around them that wasn't summarised by "I'd be much better if I'd spam Switchblade (2)"

Michael McGlen addresses this by rewarding you for not only shooting with guns, but shooting with many different guns each turn. Also, the reward being resources, it's perfect to not being cornered in a boring Goon category, opening doors to some options for your off turns.

  • Choose your arsenal

  • .18 Derringer (2) is just value in this deck. While Michael McGlen will want guns that give tempo back, 3 bullets for 2 resources and +2 is good to make sure you have enough ammo to meet all your enemies

  • .41 Derringer (2) on the other hand rewards you with an additional action if you oversucceed. Always appreciated.

  • The new Luger P08 has theoretically infinite ammo, and as long as you succeed the test, it can be seen as Vicious Blow on a stick. Said like this, it suddenly sounds more interesting, doesn't it?

  • Mauser C96 (2) is especially good in Michael McGlen since its downside (exhausting) is alleviated by having many other guns to shoot.

  • Finally the Lupara is just great for a boss fight and you need an extra kick of damage.

Illicit almost to the illegal

  • Since all of your Firearms are Illicit, they all benefit from the tempo of Fence to be played Fast.

  • Fence is further pushed by also playing the "Viola" Case fast. And since we're there, why not adding a Tennessee Sour Mash to help against scenario tests.

  • Another way to push this trait, is to lean on Friends in Low Places, choosing to dig down 9 cards, the Illicit trait obviously, but also adding the Item trait, so all your firearms can now be drawn for free.

    • Keeping a Friends in Low Places in hand is the best way to protect yourself from your Personal Weakness, turning it into an advantage since you'll now play your guns with ammo again.

Other cards

  • Lonnie Ritter and Heavy Furs are a not only a mob staple, they are also a proven strategy to support investigators like Michael McGlen with a low base Sanity, and is especially good when the investigator can use the bonus. The Heavy Furs can be dealt a damage whenever you pull a symbol token, which allows you to heal horror from Lonnie Ritter much more reliably. [!!! TRIPLE CHECK WITH RULE LAWYERS IF I CAN HEAL LONNIE'S HORROR IF THERE IS NO DAMAGE ON THE LEATHER JACKET]

  • Overpower of course thins your deck, and can be especially interesting to use when using the Luger P08's attack or to secure an additional action with the .41 Derringer (2).

  • Unexpected Courage is here to help pushing your defensive stats to 5 for scenario tests.

  • "Let God sort them out..." can really shine in this deck! Setting up for it can be a fun mini game, which is greatly helped by "Where's the party?", and the reward is much appreciated to upgrade all your mini guns.

    • Try to save a .41 Derringer (2) ammo and a Quick Thinking for a turn when you have 6 worth of damage, so you can secure the extra experience point.

    • Note that you don't have to deal the 6 damage this same turn. If you pull a 6-health enemy with "Where's the party?", it spawns exhausted, and so you can deal it 4 damage this turn, then 2 the next turn, followed by a "Let God sort them out...".

  • Finally, with all the resources generated, you can save the day by using a full blown Intel Report, collecting 2 testless resources remote.

    • Alternatives to Intel Report are Well Connected to be able to pass investigation and scenario tests, and Embezzled Treasure to save resources for the early turns of next scenario, which can be extremely helpful for consistency.

[TURN UNEXPECTED COURAGE INTO WELL CONNECTED, TENNESSEE SOUR MASH INTO WATCH THIS, LEATHER JACKET INTO HEAVY FURS]
