Introduction:

"Wait, this deck doesn't have Cornered??!"
"What are these enemy management cards doing in a Patrice deck??"

What if I told you that you could hack enough tests to make Patrice viable in Expert mode?

With 58 versions of this deck, this is probably my most worked deck and one of the decks I'm the happiest with.
If you don't want to scavenge the Ice Pick (3) again, please feel free to skip them, as this will not undermine the deck's efficiency at all.

This series is a celebration of the 20k points on ArkhamDB to thank you all for all the support received.
I will release a new standalone-ready deck concept every week on Friday for the following months, so stay tuned and keep pressing the button if you want to see more!

Let me know which investigators you would like to see next in the comment!

Enemies:

  • As the majority of enemies have 3 or less evasion, you can still roam around alone and evade most threats with Flashlight (3) combined with Impromptu Barrier from your hand or discard pile.

  • If you turn out to have Exploit Weakness in your hand at that moment, lucky you. Otherwise, you can use Dumb Luck to divert the enemy to the first player.

    • For that reason, as long as Dumb Luck is in your deck, it is best if the team's main fighter is always the first player of your squad.

    • If you have none of these, you can try a normal evasion and start again next turn with 5 new cards. To do so, Hope can help, and with the traits Monster and Humanoid, Grizzled will give you +3 against almost every enemy.

  • Very late in the campaign, you could opt for the Makeshift Trap. It is really fun to play. With Explosive Device, it is deals 3 damages to one or more enemies. Improved Timer and Tripwire allow you to drop it on any location 1 time so that it explodes the same turn an enemy enters the location and finally Simple makes it far easier to find a window to play it.

Your Personal Weakness

  • To deal with the Watcher from Another Dimension, there are multiple options:
    • The discard abilities (automatic success) of Hope and Zeal work against the Watcher from Another Dimension.
    • You should always have Augur in play to help with triggering Scavenging. When you draw the Watcher from Another Dimension, you can use the discard ability to bring one of the other 2 cats from your discard pile and use its discard ability immediately to get rid of the Watcher.
    • With Flashlight (3) and Impromptu Barrier, you will be testing against 2 .
    • If you have Gumption, you can bring the test to 0 and succeed unless you pull an .
    • Otherwise, you can try to force the test with Last Chance, committing Dumb Luck, etc...
    • Note that Dumb Luck do not work with the Watcher from Another Dimension. That would result in nothing happening.
    • By choosing Monster and Extradimensional, Grizzled and its traits give you 5 against the Watcher.
    • Based on how many copies of Grizzled are in your discard pile and when you draw the Watcher, you can assess if you want to wait for it, use a Resourceful or use a cat.
    • If you fail the test, you could also potentially use Zeal's discard ability with an Ice Pick (3) for a test-less 2 damage.
    • Finally, if nothing works, you can tank the attack with Idol of Xanatos. This is not ideal because as long as it is in your hand, you draw one less card each turn.

Looping your tools:

Negate the Mythos:

Patrice is different from other investigators as she cannot save cards in her hand from one turn to another, preventing her from planning, especially for enemies.

If you draw an enemy during the mythos phase:

  • Impromptu Barrier supported by Flashlight (3) help evading the weaker enemies.

    • Add Exploit Weakness when it is in your hand to do your part of the Heavy Lifting.

    • You can reduce the difficulty to 2 to either pass or use Dumb Luck and redirect the enemy to your enemy manager. This is particularly good because it basically means that your fighter will not draw any other card during the Mythos phase, allowing them to plan accordingly.

  • You can also try to succeed at an evasion test using Grizzled or potentially Last Chance, bringing you to high skill values, especially when combining it to Hope's 5 .

  • You can use Zeal and Ice Pick (3) to kill a 2-health enemy on your own.

If you draw a treachery card during the mythos phase:

This is the genius of this deck; it doesn't need Cornered because you discard cards to negate the consequences instead of trying not to have them happen (and most of the time not succeeding in Expert). It means that all your enemy management cards will be either used for their ability, either to negate damage/horror from a treachery test or turned into resources with Patrice's Violin.

  • Finally, Last Chance will help with treacheries that induce a test at the end of your turn, like the notorious Frozen in Fear.

Other Cards:

  • Voice of Ra is an Emergency Cache-like that you can sometimes commit if you do not need it, and it is more fun to play. It helps finance this rather expensive deck. If you don't like the approach, feel free to swap.

  • Resourceful is best used to recover non-item assets discarded because of Short Supply.

  • In the Thick of It comes with 1 mental and 1 physical trauma. If things start to be rough for you with trauma, you can invest in Bandages and Grimm's Fairy Tales, both Scavenging targets.

  • At a Crossroads gives you what Patrice needs most: additional actions. It is sometimes hard to use all your 5 cards in only 3 actions. 4 cards in 4 actions suddenly become easier to deal with.

  • For the same reason, Summoned Servitor is really good in Patrice, even though their strength decreases significantly with he difficulty level. They can be played by discarding an almost empty Schoffner's Catalogue or an empty Flashlight (3).

    • Their 4 base will help with triggering Scavenging, and you can use your Flashlight (3)'s shroud reduction on their test too, and even "Look what I found!". They are one of the best ways of adding a virtual "additional" action to Patrice.

    • Every once in a while, Wings of Night will piggyback you, saving a precious action. Note that it can only do so towards a revealed location.

  • Premonition is in the early deck as a Patrice staple: free and fast, it gives you an early indication of how to best succeed on any given test.

  • Short Supply is now well-known for Scavenging decks by now. The only thing that could go wrong is if your 2 Astral Mirrors are discarded. The fact that you'll cycle your deck faster will compensate for that possibility. All the rest could and should be retrieved.

Other Cards Considered:

  • Of course Cornered could be included in this deck. However, since it is geared towards bigger difficulties, the +2 is not as helpful as for other decks. Also, we are using cards to negate the mythos rather than trying to pass tests.

  • String of Curses could be placed in your deck if you are about to start a campaign/scenario with many enemies that doom. As this is impossible to control unless other teammates also use it, I decided not to play it.

Cool deck! I like the combo of Flashlight and Old Keyring with Augur, in general my own thoughts are that the Flashlight/Old Keyring combo are better served on investigators with low rather than high as they can typically find clues without the extra kit anyway (and besides Augur does give you once per turn high ). Astral Mirror seems like a great way to juggle so many tools, so that's also a very nice touch.

Love the combos here, and the idea of the summoned servitor to give her extra actions ! Is Idol of Xanatos worth it ? I mean, if not with her, when would you play this card, but I still was a bit skeptical... :p
Also, if you need ideas for next decks, I would love to see a Marie Lambeau or a Winifred deck ;)

I have a somewhat similar Patrice deck I’ve been playing with: arkhamdb.com

One of my favorite new combos is to use Binder's Jar on the Watcher from Another Dimension, particularly with Explosive Ward. Being able to take out the Watcher for the entire scenario is very good, and you even get another hand slot from Astral Mirror for your trouble!

I challenge you to do a Lola Hayes. Let's see it!

Jan 29, 2023 Valentin1331 · 67237

@HungryColquhoun thanks! Let me know if you have the time to take it to the table and I'd love to hear your feedback!

@captainfire To be fair, I didn't expect Idol of Xanatos to be this satisfying. It really feels like: "Oh, I should be dying? let me ditch these 2 cards that I was not about to use anyways."
It works especially well in this deck as not every card is meant to be used each turn. If you have to deal with an enemy, you can probably get rid of a couple of investigation techs, and if you get a treachery test, then your enemy management cards will be best used to negate the damage/horror.

Regarding your requests, I had a draft for Winifred, but I kind of gave up on her because it was not "groundbreaking". I could have another look since she did get quite a lot of good cards. Marie Lambeau may come very soon... If you are on the Mythos Busters Discord and you're interested to test it, I'd love to give you the link!

@HarrisonF, I really like your approach too! Peter Sylvestre and Improvised Shield for infinite soak is also genius.
For the Binder's Jar on the watcher, while it is a great idea to store weaknesses on it, it does sound like a lot of hoops to go through: you need to spawn it at your location, succeed at an attack, and deal an additional damage to attach it to the Binder's Jar (because you need to defeat the enemy, not just discard it...). For that matter, I think this deck is well-equipped to deal with the Watcher, and it's easy to get rid of it in one single action, 2 if you get him twice (against also at least 2 actions in your version). When it comes to the Explosive Ward, that is a good idea, but I'd be really careful with the increasing cost because resource management was maybe my main struggle with this deck...

@mattastrophic, challenge not accepted, I tried, but I couldn't find anything worth posting! I got so desperate that I asked a friend to help me....
I may try again to have a look, I have a couple of ideas (that never lead anywhere with her), but I doubt I'll find something better than your latest proposal...

Jan 29, 2023 captainfire · 231

@Valentin1331 Yeah, Wini received good cards with TSK but nor did I find something that wasn't obvious for her... Also, yeah, I'm interested by the link, I just joined their discord, same pseudo ;)

Jan 29, 2023 mattastrophic · 3233

@Valentin1331 Oh no!

But that's OK. Lola fits a different style than what you are going for with these decklists, one of "good stuff" efficient cards with some synergies. She also is best experienced in a campaign because of how well she levels up and can adapt to the group's situation.

That being said... I'll say this... Runic Axe. That is all.

I was thinking about the Astral mirror, but I thought it was too slow for Patrice. I guess in expert, you better just reduce the skill test by 0 than to try anything else. Even testing at 8 or 9 skill value isn't reliable anymore. Pretty selfish Patrice decklist though. Little commit for others, no bless tech, and enemy management is abysmal. Your lvl 0 deck seems to rely a bit too much on flashlight III to be functional. It absolutely hurts you if you don't see the card in your top 15 ones.

Feb 01, 2023 Valentin1331 · 67237

@mugu thanks for the comment!

I am a bit unsure how you find Astral Mirror slow since it gives free actions to play your hand slots then. My main doubt about it is its price.

Almost all of my decks are "selfish", indeed. The worst example is probably my Vincent Lee deck that hardly gives any On the Mend to the team. It is a hard balance as I try to ensure that the decks I publish are as independent as possible. I want my flexes to be as reliable in true solo as in a 4 player group for instance. Of course, based on your playstyle or if you build your decks together with your team, it is always nice to make adjustments to cooperate better.

I can't entirely agree with you about the enemy management part, though This deck is more than decent at evasion, with a chance to deal with a couple of enemies with Dumb Luck or Exploit Weakness.
And to be fair, for a main cluever, not dying if I draw an enemy and my fighter cannot rescue me this turn is more than I usually expect.

For the lvl 0 deck, it is a bit lacklustre; you're right. Short Supply helps slightly with consistency, and cards like Drawn to the Flame, "Look what I found!", Read the Signs or Shed a Light with the Flashlight (0) on a 2-shroud location (not rare for first scenarios) can go a long way in my experience.

Let me know if you decide to take the deck on a trip, or if you do some adjustments, what you changed!

Feb 01, 2023 mugu · 190

Mostly for the resource fee yeah. If you play Astral mirror, it gives you little room to wriggle with events, which is the cheapest and fastest way to play Patrice. Your list is tight enough for it to be less a problem (thanks to the dilemmas).

You do have a shot for evading with barrier, which is great for a main cluever to be a little independent. I wouldn't count on the other events. The draw nature of Patrice makes it too unreliable.

Very cool deck, but a little too one trick poney to my taste.

You are such a badass deck creator, and I think the community is lucky to have you. Thank you for putting so much work into so many decks! It really helps me get more life out of the game, seeing these cool ideas and getting me excited to go play them. I hope to see you sticking around for awhile ♥️

Great deck, looks so much fun.

Mar 13, 2023 Aust · 1

does it work in true solo?

Mar 13, 2023 Valentin1331 · 67237

@FlarkeFiasco @Dreadfish thank you so much. That is super kind! These reactions are the fuel that keeps me going, and this deck series may run for a little longer, so I hope you'll keep enjoying it!

@Aust I would say that it does work rather well in True Solo though you won't need 2 clues that often, and you may have an issue with boss fighting. While Exploit Weakness will help you, I suggest maybe switching 2 "Look what I found!" with 2 Spectral Razor to increase your chances to defeat bigger enemies that need to be taken to the graveyard.

Apr 10, 2023 Nicarus_noticarus · 1

This is really well done. Without testing it, i wonder if upgraded scavenging can do the work of astral mirror? Also, did you consider starting with /flashlight/, /old keyring/ and /down the rabbit hole/?

Apr 10, 2023 Valentin1331 · 67237

Thanks @Nicarus_noticarus for the feedback!

We like Astral Mirror mostly because of the fact that it opens new hand slots for us! And because of the many new upgrades that we take, including Astral Mirror, Down the Rabbit Hole doesn't seem like a great idea in my opinion :)

I hope you'll be inspired enough to take the deck to the table and have fun with it!

Sep 17, 2023 Mella · 1

Very late to the party, but is the upgrade path meant to be done in that exact order? Spending xp on astral mirror before getting the keyrings and the ice picks means its only uses are a couple extra actions and the ability to have two flashlights AND the violin out at once, right? Is that really better than delaying the upgrade until after you get the keyrings? Maybe I'm just missing something, either way thanks for the cool deck.

Jun 18, 2024 ChrisSF · 1

This looks like a great deck. Too bad the newest 2024 taboo list increases the XP cost of some of its core cards. Is this deck still viable for a full campaign? With 0 level Scavenging now costing 2XP, you can start with at most 1 copy.

Jun 19, 2024 Valentin1331 · 67237

Hey @ChrisSF, thanks for checking the deck!

Since the taboo decided to increase the xp cost of Scavenging, I would probably recommend starting with 2 Scrounge for Supplies instead, still get the flashlights (3) first, and then get the Scavenging before Astral Mirror.

Let me know how it goes for you!

Jul 22, 2024 SmokedRWA · 1

@Valentin1331 Sorry, but do you mind explaining why we only upgrade one copy of Scavenging?

Is it because we already get a free action to play an item into our hand from Astral Mirror that a second copy of upgraded Scavenging becomes redundant?

Jul 22, 2024 Valentin1331 · 67237

@SmokedRWA hey buddy. This is one of the reasons indeed. The other is that one of your primary target for Scavenging is the Ice Pick which is fast, making it less important to have the upgraded version.

So all in all, since the deck needed quite some XP on other cards, I was happy to save 2xp here, but if you feel like it is too clunky the way it is, feel free to upgrade another one!

Oct 04, 2024 Alfy · 1

Really fun deck to play!

Quick remark: I do t think Grizzled works with Watcher from Another Dimension, as the later is not an Encounter card.
